Chapter Seventeen

Kemi didn’t know how she was going to get through the dinner party. Not only was the restaurant noisy, especially when the children’s party at the other end of the room seemed to be descending into anarchy and chaos that involved screaming at the top of their voices, but listening to the woman next to her was a challenge. The brunette, droning on in a monotone was challenging Kemi’s will to live.

She had smiled when Dotty had introduced herself. That was, after all, the whole point of an evening like this – to meet the woman of your dreams and at the same time network. After introductions, Kemi assumed that a conversation would follow and while the woman wasn’t her type, she was grateful to be able to practice her rusty flirting techniques.

If only.

Instead, Kemi had been subjected to a twenty-minute diatribe in a voice that made watching grass grow seem like watching … she was desperately searching for a simile … or was it a metaphor? … No, no definitely a simile. Suffice to say that Kemi hadn’t been so bored since she’d gone on a date to watch Shakespeare in the Pouring Rain, or was it Shakespeare in the Park, or was it Shakespeare in the Park in the Pouring Rain? A three-hour, semi-audible squelch is how she had described it to Maddie when she had seen her next.

Kemi must have been keen on the woman she had gone with as she had always hated Shakespeare, and when she was quizzed on the subject, simply said that if it was all translated into proper English she might give it another go. But then again, maybe not. What was that woman’s name again?

Kemi smiled and nodded politely as she saw Dotty’s lips were still moving. She wouldn’t have been able to repeat even one word Dotty had said for at least the last minute and was hoping that a smile and a knowing nod were the appropriate response to her monotonous drone.

The one redeeming factor of staying stuck with the bore, was the gorgeous olive-skinned woman sitting opposite, talking to the redhead next to her. Kemi had managed to steal a glance at her several times when the mono-woman had broken the flow by taking a sip or two of her wine. A couple of those times, the vision in a little black dress had been looking back at her and had smiled. My God, Kemi closed her eyes briefly, she is so beautiful, only to be dragged away by the drone’s latest promotion.

‘I was made partner by thirty you know,’ Dotty said.

Well, yes, I do know because that’s the third time you’ve mentioned it.

Kemi had caught Chloe’s attention a couple of times, pleading with her eyes for redemption. No deal. All Chloe had done was roll her eyes, shrug her shoulders, and smile. Did she know about this dreadful woman before?
